DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Smithtown Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps across Smithtown, with most replacements running $280 to $520 installed depending on flue size and whether your crown needs resealing. Our trucks carry the common DuraFlex 6-inch and 8-inch round caps plus the oval adapters used on many of the 1970s and 1980s colonials near Caleb Smith State Park Preserve, so we can usually swap it the same visit. Most Smithtown homeowners realize their cap has failed when water starts dripping down the flue after a nor’easter, or when a neighbor spots rust stains on the brickwork they can see from the street.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex chimney caps are not universal. The part you need depends on whether your liner is the standard DuraFlex SW (stainless wall) series, the lighter DuraFlex HT for gas appliances, or the older DuraFlex Pro that was common in Suffolk County installs from the late 1990s through about 2010. The SW series takes a heavier-gauge cap with a 5/8-inch mesh screen; the HT uses a lighter cap with finer 3/8-inch mesh. You can identify your liner by the stamp on the collar just above the fireplace damper, or by the tag left from the original installation.

We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with DuraFlex. For most Smithtown homes, we install OEM DuraFlex caps because the fit is exact and the 304 stainless holds up to our coastal salt air better than the generic equivalents we have tested. That said, if your flue has an unusual offset or you need a custom width to clear an adjacent vent, we also source quality aftermarket caps from Gelco and Olympia Chimney that mate cleanly with DuraFlex collars. We will measure on site and show you both options before you decide.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Is Failing

  • Water dripping down the flue during rain. The cap’s lid has warped or the seal between cap and flue collar has cracked. On Smithtown’s south shore exposure, we see this inside of eight years because the salt air accelerates corrosion at the weld points.
  • Rust streaks running down the chimney brick or siding. The cap’s stainless shell has breached at a seam and water is traveling down the outside of the flue, staining whatever it touches. By the time you see this from the ground, the underlying collar may also be compromised.
  • Debris, leaves, or bird nests in the fireplace. The mesh screen has corroded through or been torn by wind-borne branches. The mesh on DuraFlex caps is 18-gauge; after a decade of freeze-thaw cycles, it fatigues at the attachment points first.
  • Downdraft smoke or cold air entering the room. The cap’s baffle has detached or the lid has shifted off-center, breaking the chimney’s draft dynamics. This is common after high wind events, which Smithtown sees more of than inland Suffolk County.
  • The cap is visibly tilted or missing from the roofline. The base clamps have loosened or the flue collar itself has deteriorated. We have found caps on lawns along Jericho Turnpike after March storms more than once.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range in Smithtown
DuraFlex cap (standard 6″ or 8″ round, OEM) $180 - $290
DuraFlex cap with oval adapter $240 - $350
Labor: removal, collar inspection, install, seal $100 - $170
Crown resealing if needed (HeatShield or similar) $85 - $150
Total installed, most Smithtown jobs $280 - $520

The price spreads because some flue collars need cleaning or minor repair before the new cap seats properly, and because access varies. A walkable roof on a ranch near Kings Park is straightforward; a steep colonial off Route 25 takes longer and requires additional safety rigging. We give you the full number before we start, and that is the number on the invoice. The cap itself carries the manufacturer’s warranty, and our installation is covered by the 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There is nothing wrong with looking. You can check from the ground with binoculars for obvious tilt, missing mesh, or rust streaks. You can shine a flashlight up the flue from the fireplace to spot debris or daylight where the cap should block it.

But installing a chimney cap means working at height on a roof, often near a steep ridge, with the added complication that a failed cap usually means a deteriorated collar that needs assessment before the new part goes on. A cap seated on a rotted collar will leak again inside of a season, and you will not know until the water damage shows inside. We do not recommend homeowners climb their own roofs, and we especially do not recommend guessing at collar condition from below. Our technicians carry the right caps, the right sealants, and the camera to inspect the joint from inside the flue while they are up there. Most jobs take under two hours, and you get photos you can see and a plain-English verdict.
